Beta Reading Services

Have you completed multiple drafts of your manuscript? Do you think that you might be ready for the next step? But are you still a little unsure? A beta reader might be what you need. They offer you constructive and honest feedback that will help you move to the next step.

What Does a Beta Reader Do?

As a beta reader, I will read a manuscript from a reader’s perspective and provide the writer with feedback. I will look at those ‘bigger picture’ problems that you might be having—from plot inconsistency to characterisation. This feedback can then be used by you to help sort those suckers out. Beta readers are not editors because of that they won’t proofread or edit your work.

Why Do You Need a Beta Reader?

Beta Readers provide objective, honest and constructive feedback that will help improve your manuscript. Their feedback comes from the perspective of a reader, therefore, giving you some insight on how your future readers might read it.

Why Should You Hire Me?

I’ve been reading and reviewing books as Angel Reads for nearly ten years now. Therefore, I have a wide knowledge of the current state of the publishing industry. I provide honest and helpful responses to your work to help you move onto the next stage of your publishing journey.

I have high attention to detail and will ensure that your manuscript stands up to industry standards in terms of story and structure, and will include insights on where it will fit in the market. As a diverse reader myself, I will look carefully into the diversity of the book and ensuring that it doesn’t fault or hurt anyone.

I have an Associate Degree in Publishing and Editing from RMIT Melbourne. As well as several internships with Australian publishers and writing festivals. In addition, I have experience working freelance with publishers, authors and agents regarding beta reading and readers reports. Finally, I also bring three years of bookselling experience.

What I Will Read

The manuscripts that I’m willing to beta read are;

  • Young Adult in any genre
  • New Adult
  • Romance in nearly any sub-genre
  • Fantasy/Paranormal
  • Middle Grade

If you would like a better overview of the books that I read you can check out my reviews here and over on Goodreads.

I will decline anything non-fiction as I don’t feel equipped to give honest and critical feedback that will be helpful.

What Do My Services Include?

  • Feedback on manuscript: 3 – 5 pages of detailed feedback (depending on the size of your novel) that will focus on themes, characterisation, plot, world-building, sense of place and more
  • Comments throughout the document on things that might stand out to me while reading.
  • I will discuss where I think it might fit in the market, as well as giving you some feedback on which publishers and agents I think might suit your manuscript.
  • I will also discuss what I think is working/isn’t working.
  • Anything else that you would like me to focus on.

What Do My Services Not Include?

  • I will not be proofreading/editing. This refers to the correction of spelling and grammar. However, if I do see anything glaring throughout the manuscript especially if it is repetitive, I will let you know.
  • I will not publicly post any feedback or comments.

Rates

$2.50 AUD per 1000 words

If your manuscript is 80, 000 words, then the total amount will be $200AUD. Words will also be rounded up to the nearest thousand. I accept novels, novels, and short stories. There is a minimum of $100AUD per manuscript.

It will take me at least 2 weeks to read the manuscript and write the report. However, if you would like the report in a rush there is a rush fee of $60AUD for a week and $100 for 3 days.

Payments will be made either through PayPal or direct deposit.

Would You Like To Hire Me?

If my services sound like something that you will benefit from them please email me at angel@angelreads.com.

Please include manuscript title, blurb, word count, genre and what you are looking for the report. If you have a deadline please also include that. Please also include ‘Beta Reading Inquiry’ in the subject line.

Testimonials

Angelique’s feedback and insights were extraordinarily helpful; not only in ensuring manuscripts were up to the highest standard in terms of story, structure, and grammar; but also in providing commentary on where they sat in the market and offering her own instincts as to whether or not they were ready for the industry – instincts I paid keen attention to, trusting as I am in Angelique’s perceptiveness.

I cannot recommend Angelique’s services highly enough, or endorse her character more forcefully.

– Danielle Binks, literary agent at Jacinta di Mase Management and author.

Angelique’s feedback on my manuscript gave me solid insight into where the story was working and what needed to improve. She provided excellent detail about everything from character arcs and descriptions to sensitivity issues and plotting. The comments she provided were in-depth, incredibly useful, and returned in a timely fashion. I highly recommend Angelique’s beta reading service – her industry knowledge and knack for detail would be a huge advantage for any writer.

– Ellie Marney, author of the Every series, Circus Hearts and more

I was lucky enough to have a beta read by Angelique. Not only did she give me a thorough report, providing feedback I had specifically requested, but she included a fascinating insight into where my novel would sit within the reading market. I found this extra, industry-specific information particularly useful as a first-time author.

– Sarah Fernee, Querying Author

March was a better reading month than February for March was a better reading month than February for me, and while I’m still stuck in my heated rivalry fanfiction era I managed to scrap out of it a little this month.

I reread four books from the sweet omegaverse series and honestly had the best time. I also read two of my most anticipated reads of the year and had a blast. Sadly I did also have my first dnf of the year.

What did you read this March? Any standouts? What are you looking forward to reading in April? Let’s chat!

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.

Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I onl Well February wasn’t the best reading month. I only ended up reading 3 books in. 3 pretty fun books but one of my slowest readings months in a while.

And I’m going to be honest here it’s because I’ve been constantly reading Heated Rivalry fanfics. 🤷‍♀️ I’m having the best time though.

How was your reading in February? Any 5 star reads?
