TV Review: Shadowhunters 2×16 ‘Day of Atonement’

Jace and Clary go on an unsanctioned mission, while Maia helps Simon out at a Yom Kippur family dinner.

Day of Atonement:

This week was a really interesting episode. Day of Atonement really delves back into the shadowhunter world. And we are given some answers to last weeks shocking discovery about Sebastian.

The shadowhunter world is still reeling from the escape of Valentine and everyone is on edge. But, even before the episode starts we know who has Valentine.

Alec is feeling the pressure of being head of the New York Institute and Valentine escaping on his watch. Jace and Clary head to Idris to an old cabin where Jace spent some as a child with Valentine.

Meanwhile, Simon has a family dinner that doesn’t exactly go to plan.

Sebastian

Sebastian had a really big impact in this weeks episode. We got to really find out more about this life growing up with and without Valentine and how he ended up the way that he is.

I really enjoyed that we got to delve deep into Sebastian character in Day of Atonement. We really get to see him become ‘Sebastian’ – he is evil and cunning.

Clary and Jace

This episode had a great focus on Clary and Jace and we really get to see them connect in a way they hadn’t before.

We get to see them both worry about each other and while they both can’t admit it yet, we know that they are falling for each other.

Clary and Jace dive into Lake Lyn – literally. It was amazing to see something so close to the book in the TV show. I have said this a couple of times before, TV adaptations are hard and while they aren’t sticking closely to the book, I am still really enjoying it.

Simon and Maia

In Day of Atonement, we start to see the connection between Simon and Maia and while I don’t love them together. It’s still really nice to see. They are both interesting characters and together they are quite dynamic. It’s definitely going to create more tension in the show, much like the books.

Lightwoods

The audience also got a good look at the Lightwood family in Day of Atonement. We see the tension growing between the Lightwood kids and their father. We see Alec struggle with the responsibilities of being head of an Institute and dealing with the outcomes of losing something very valuable to the Clave.

Overall

I really enjoyed this episode. I liked delving into characters more, finding out more about the shadowhunter world and seeing some ships come to life. I think that the audience got a nice outlook on Sebastian and got to see his – demon side. We see the connection between Clary and Jace start to really form and with only a few episodes left I am so ready.

Simon goes down a dark path while Alec and team prepares to transport Valentine. Aline makes a visit

A Problem of Memory:

This week was intense. I know I say this all the time, but gosh. There was a lot going on in A Problem with Memory, but it all seemed to fit. There are still very high emotions from the last episode at the Seelie Court and it’s not going to go away anytime soon. Clary is trying to talk to Simon, Jace is trying to talk to Clary and Simon is avoiding everyone. Simon turns down a dark path and makes A Problem with Memory so true.

While the tension is hitting boiling point between those three, Valentine’s transfer is imminent and the whole Institute is on edge. Plus Sebastian is up to his usual tricks.

Clary and Simon

A lot of A Problem with Memory focused on Clary and Simon’s relationship and how they are going to go on after last week. To those that have read the books a lot of the tension between these two – we knew about. However, it was hard to see. I love the friendship between these two and to see them both so distraught was heartbreaking. Nevertheless, I felt that both Clary and Simon grew in this episode and I hope to see more of that.

Simon

Simon had it real hard this episode. We get to see another side of him, his vampire side really comes out and while I didn’t love seeing it. Seeing him be a vampire was great. We also get to see a side of the shadow world that we haven’t seen before. A side that is horrible and dangerous.

Sebastian

Wow. Wow. Wow. This episode the viewer really got to see the side of Sebastian that we all hate. We see that he is deceiving and will stop and nothing to get what he wants. He is horrible and it was great to see that.

Readers would know what he is like, but the show really took that and created this character that is very much Sebastian.

Ending

I am very confused. Like I don’t know where they are going with this. I really don’t. I am happy to see what they do. But I am a little confused.

Overall

I enjoyed this episode. There was a lot of character development and tension that really grew in A Problem with Memory. The tension between Clary, Simon, and Jace is growing, but I am excited to see where they go. Sebastian – holy. Excited to see where this season goes, only 5 episodes left I think.

Alec has big plans to mend fences with the Downworlders, while Jace and Clary are summoned by the Seelie Queen.

The Fair Folk:

Holy! This week’s episode of Shadowhunters was intense. As soon as I saw the name The Fair Folk, I knew what was going to happen in this episode. I was both excited and scared at the same time. There was a lot holding up to this scene and I really think they did well.

The Fair Folk follows the aftermath of shadowhunter killings in last week’s episode. Alec now head of the New York Institute starts to try and form ties between shadowhunters and the downworlders. To do that Alec sends Jace and Clary to the Seelie Court to meet with the Seelie Queen. And you know things are bound to get crazy. Plus we start to see Sebastian true colours.

Sebastian

I loved Sebastian’s story line and character arc in The Fair Folk. The audience and even some of the characters are starting to see his cunning ways. And gosh this makes me excited.

For those who have read the books, we know what Sebastian is like. We know that at first he likes to influence those around him. But, slowly his true colours shine through and that is what’s happening. I cannot wait to see where they take his character. That endings!

Simon/Clary/Jace

This has been coming for a long time now. But with the title of The Fair Folk, I knew what this episode was going to entail. And gosh it was good. However, it was also heartbreaking at the same time.

I’ve spoken about this before, but I’m not a massive fan of the acting throughout the series. However, I think that during this scene, everything was spot on. In saying that, I do wish that Clary and Jace’s feelings were more played on during the series so far. I felt that to people that don’t know the series – they might be slightly confused.

The Lightwoods

I felt that this episode had a lot of focus on the Lightwood family. Maryse is back and we are starting to see a change in her. She really starts connecting better with her kids and it was nice to see.

There was scene between Maryse and Alec where they are talking about the Lightwood name. Alec said something along the lines of ‘this isn’t the worse things the Lightwood family have done.’ I spent the next five minutes laughing thinking about Lightworm.

Fair Folk

We get our first look at the Seelie Queen in The Fair Folk. And I think she was brilliant – cunning and manipulative but beautiful at the same time. However, I did feel she was a little on the younger side.

The Seelie court was also so beautiful and so how I imagined it. I feel in love and it was great to see a different side to the shadow world.

I just want to talk quickly about something. I am seeing a lot of hate recently about Shadowhunters and the way they are going about things. I am all for great adaptations, however, I also see that changes are necessary. You would think that after one and a half seasons that people would get the idea that yes things are different. I hate going onto my timeline on twitter and seeing not only fans but fan accounts having a go at the staff and actors. If you don’t like what they are doing, that is fine – but please just stop complaining every second.

Overall

I enjoyed this episode. A lot happened and there is so much more to go. But I am really looking forward to see where they are taking it. I loved seeing different sides of the shadow world, seeing characters break and seeing others come together.
