I received a copy of Dangerous Lies by Becca Fitzpatrick from Simon and Schuster in exchange for an honest review as part of the Dangerous Lies blog tour. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.
I’m a massive fan of Becca Fitzpatrick’s books, I read the Hush, Hush series when it first came out in 2009 and I have been a fan ever since so when I read the synopsis of Dangerous Lies I just knew I was going to like it and I wasn’t wrong.
Dangerous Lies follows protagonist, Stella Gordan as she lives a life that she doesn’t want, not in the slightest. Stella has witness a murder and consequently she has been placed under witness protection. The thing is; she doesn’t want to be there and she doesn’t like to follow the rules.

Stella. It drove the point home. Chet didn’t know me. He didn;t even know my real name. He sat there looking fustrated and vulnerable, cutting himself open for a girl who didn’t exist.

I have a love hate relationship with Stella. She can act like a 5 year at times but then I understand why. Her life has been ripped apart, all because she saw a murder. She is living in a place where she thinks she doesn’t belong. She doesn’t know anything about where she is living, doesn’t know anyone and she can’t keep in touch with anyone from her pervious life. But has time goes on she realises that she might just belong in Thunder Basin, Nebraska.
I actually like when books are set in what I like to call country America. It’s nice getting away from the city, away from all the chaos. I also love it since it’s different to a lot of other books I have read or even TV shows that I watch.
Chet…Chet…Chet. Move over Patch I have a new Becca Fitzpatrick book boyfriend. Okay no Patch you can stay. But gosh Chet, how can you know love him. Seriously. I just cannot explain. You have to read and find out.

Becca Fitzpatrick is pretty good at making book boyfriends, especially ones that make your heart skip a beat.
Then we have Carmina who is the cranky ex-cop that I just could not like at all. She got on my nervous so much and no matter what happens she was just awful to Stella. She never took into account how hard this is for her – she thinks that she acting like a brat but she doesn’t realise why. Although I came to like her a bit at the end. It’s difficult to like people when they are mean for so long.
Dangerous Lies keeps you on the edge of your toes, you think it’s going in one direction and then it flips. It’s like when you watch NCIS and at the start you have no idea what is going on, who killed who? But as the episode goes on; you start to put everything together.
All the lies though – holy – I just didn’t know what was real and what was lie. But that is what made this book awesome.
The thing I like about Becca Fitzpatrick’s writing is that it is easy to read and it flows from one word to another. However, It’s not easy in the way that you feel like you are being talked down to but it’s written so that everyone can read it.
Overall I truly enjoyed Dangerous Lies it kept my brain on its toes and was a quick read. Stella is a difficult character that you come to love, while Chet sweeps you off your feet. If you are a Becca Fitzpatrick fan you are going to like this book and if you are not well you are still going to like it as well. There is so much more I can talk about but I going to leave it like this.

Author Interview

How did you come up with the idea for Rev Girl?
My first draft of REV GIRL was based very closely on my own life. Throughout the drafts and on the advice of my editors, the story took on a life of its own and Clover Kassedy developed a lot as a character. I guess I took the advice “write what you know” quite literally lol. I also gained a lot of inspiration for the story and for Clover as a character from the kick-butt Real Life REV GIRLS – please check them out at my website www.leighhuttonbooks.com

What is Clover (the main protagonist) like in Rev Girl?
Clover becomes a strong, independent young woman who’s capable and able to stand alone, but this doesn’t come easy to her. Like so many teens, she struggles to fit in, to deal with bullies and peer pressure and boys and resisting the party “cool kid” scene. She also has a wicked sweet tooth and is crap at math (both are points that hit close to home for me 😉
Who are your most loved and most hated character in your book and why?
Wow, great question! What a tough question… I think, like in real life, this isn’t always black and white. Dallas, for example, can be one of my favourite characters but in the same breath, I can also hate him. Relationships are complex, people are flawed and difficult and beautiful all at the same time. There’s a lot of characters like that in REV GIRL and in my second book, JUMP GIRL. That said, there ARE two clear villains in REV GIRL, and I definitely hate at least one of them. They both bully Clover and many of the other kids in her school and at races. I’d like to say more about these two girls, but I don’t want to give the story away! Oh, sorry – I just realised I’d only listed who I hated! How interesting… Well, Clover definitely is a character that I love. She represents myself in a lot of ways and those I hold most dear. I’ve always been a sucker for the underdog. I also love Sydney and Sera, her two best friends, and Kerry, her best racing friend. And Ryder. I definitely love Ryder, too.
How do you just sit down and write?
Another toughie! Nice work, Angel 😉 It’s like getting fit. Hard as buggery to start, but once you’ve been to the gym a few times and the endorphins start to kick in – you start to get hooked. The key is to form a routine. This was easier for me than people who start writing seriously when they have a lot of time on their hands; I only had two hours a day during baby nap time and about an hour at night so as soon as the little man was asleep I’d make myself a cup of green tea, sit down at my computer and lose myself in the beautiful thrill of creativity. But there are tough days. Days it literally hurts to write each word. Days your muscles burn and you have to FORCE yourself to do every minute on the treadmill. Pushing through these days is hard. But I can guarantee that the next day will be easier. And before you know it, word-by-word as Anne Lamott would say, you’ve got a first draft of a novel. Force yourself to make a routine of writing.
If you could go anywhere in the world, real or fiction, where would it be and why? I would go back to Canada to see my friends and family. It’s been way too long. It would be a dream come true to launch my second book, which is set primarily in Calgary (as well as Florida and France) in Brisbane and in Calgary.

If you were stuck on a deserted Island, what are the 5 books that you would have with you and why?
– Game of Thrones Book One because I really want to read it.
– Serena by Ron Rash because his words are gorgeous and I love that freaking book so much.
– Riders by Jilly Cooper because it’s the first book I fell in love with.
– Any of the Hunger Games, because they are gripping enough to hopefully keep my mind from deteriorating to the point where I’m tempted to create an imaginary friend out of a volleyball.
– And Romeo and Juliette by Shakespeare as I think a re-read could teach my a lot.

About the Author

Leigh Hutton grew up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was lucky enough to travel extensively with her parents and younger sister, for horse show jumping – they spent a lot of time in Denver, Colorado, and Phoenix, Arizona – as well as holiday trips across America to the Baja Peninsula, and later on for her chosen sport of dirt bike racing. Her favourite race was Honey Lake, California, in 2002 – the same year she attended her first International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in the Czech Republic. Here she met a lovely family from Sydney, as well as the Australian team. Leigh moved to Australia a few months later, to race motorcycles. She fell in love with a fellow racer and Brisbane boy, found journalism, which she studied at the Queensland University of Technology, and shifted into media and public relations, to promote enduro and motocross and its competitors. She’s become especially passionate about promoting girls and women in all action sports. Leigh was a reluctant reader as a teenager, but discovered Jilly Cooper in her early twenties and has been devouring books ever since. Torn Away:

I received a copy of Torn Away as part of the blog tour, but it has in no way influenced my review.

I didn’t know what to expect going into reading Torn Away, all I knew was that it would be was quite devastating, and it was.

Torn Away starts off like any normal day, but then devastation strikes and I felt all the pain.

The writing style of Jennifer Brown was simply stunning. It captured me in so many different ways – the emotions that I experienced in Torn Away made it where I could not stop the tears from falling down, with the anger and the hurt. After the death of her mother and sister by a tragic tornado that hit her town, Jersey is shipped off to her biological father, whom she hasn’t seen since she was a baby. Her family, her father’s family are so frustrating and not understanding in any way. I cannot really explain how they acted in a way but let’s just they made my blood boiled. She not only had to go through the journey of grief but with people that don’t care, but people that don’t feel the same. It’s heartbreaking.

Jersey is a very interesting protagonist. She is so strong, I wouldn’t have managed the way she did. Her loss made me, most likely make other readers, realise what really is important in life. It might also re-define your priorities.

There is no physical human in Torn Away that is the villain. The only villain here is the tornado – Their damage is unstoppable, even often unanticipated. They can destroy lives in a matter of seconds.

Torn Away is a really hard book to review, not because it isn’t good, but because it is so emotionally draining that you feel so torn and broken after reading it. It tells a tale of loneliness, loss and grief, but, fundamentally, it’s not a tale of hopelessness.

We as readers go on the grief journey with Jersey. We go through the hurt, frustration and finally understanding.

The thing that hurt me the most was how Jersey dealt with the death of her sister. I have 3 siblings myself and I have no idea how I would manage in any way shape or form if they died. Jersey’s memories of her little sister are so emotional. She held onto these memories, some positive and beautiful and some negative. You felt the hurt.

I believed and felt every emotion of Jersey – The hurt, the loss, the anger. Then finally we get to see some happiness in her life.

After her not so good experience with her father and his family, she moves in with her mother’s parents. Even though she is going through the grief, she finally starts to see some light. The little moments with her grandfather were just beautiful. And the moment at the end with her grandmother brought tears to my eyes, in a good way. Then there is Kolby. He is the boy next door, he becomes Jersey’s support along with her grandparents. Jennifer Brown is talented writer who builds situations and people that are not only convincing, but appropriate too.

Overall, even though Torn Away was heartbreaking. The author reaches without much effort at all, breaks down your walls and touches you so you cry like a baby.
