Discussion: Fanfiction?

Discussion: Fanfiction?

Discussion fanfiction

I have wanted to write this discussion for quite some time now, however, when every time I sit down I don’t know what to say, I decided that it is time to just write it. Fanfiction is a controversial discussion around the book word; some people love it, some people hate it. Is it right to do? Is it wrong? Why do people write it? Questions like these are asked all the time.

I have been reading Fanfiction since I was twelve years old. I loved it then and I love it now. The main reason I read fanfiction is, that I love a book so much that I don’t want to leave it, the world of the book captures me and all I want to do is delve more into it.

Firstly, what is fanfiction?

Fanfiction is where someone uses characters, the world or other attributes of an already published novel to write a story.

What do I read?

I don’t read a range of fanfiction, at the moment I mostly only read Harry Potter and if you know me well you will know why. Harry has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and I want to be with him forever. I love reading anything to do with James and Lily and Harry and Ginny.

I love how people can create and build characters’, I love seeing how people perceive characters, relationships the world. I may not agree with some of the changes that they have done, and that is totally fine.

When I first started to read fanfiction I did read some Twilight stories, because at that aged I loved it. However, I never read any Bella and Edward fanfiction – I don’t even know why, I always seemed to get bored with them, so I read Bella and different members of the pack – yes I’m weird.

I have also read some Vampire Academy, Percy Jackson and The Mortal Instruments. Vampire Academy is probably higher on my reading list than the others.

There is one rule that I have when reading fanfiction, I only read stories where a book/series have finished. I don’t want to get confused with how other people see the characters and how the author has shown them.

fanfiction discussion

Is it okay?

The main question that is asked about fanfiction; is it okay to write? It’s hard to have a solid answer for this, for me, if the person who has written the story isn’t gaining money from it and has acknowledged that they have not created the world, characters etc. – then I’m okay with it.

However, if the person is receiving money or has published the book then now, they shouldn’t do that and I won’t read it.

There are some authors that don’t like when their books have inspired fanfictions and that is totally okay – they can feel that way, they can think that way.

I feel that fanfictions is an amazing exercise for people that want to be authors. They are able to write with established characters they can work with that, they are able to create dialogue, write in a world that has already been built. It’s a way of just working on the authors writing rather than world building.

Bad side

One of the things that I dislike about reading fanfiction is the response from others, it’s not a thing that I think about all the time, nevertheless when people ask if you read it – I don’t like to say yes – because they look down on me.

It’s mostly since I have been at university that I’ve noticed this and maybe it’s because they are older and most fanfiction is to do with young adult novels, and teens and people that read young adult can connect with it more – I don’t know.

Another bad side is that there is some umm…quite horrible pairings in fanfiction. Some that even thinking about makes me cringe, it’s like a big no-no. From time to time you stumble on it without realising and you can get a little shock.

Also, the writing of some stories are not up to a certain standard that I like to read and it’s easy to close the tab and start another.

fanfiction discussion

Where can you read it?

Most of the fanfiction that I do read is on fanfiction.net – I like how it works, how I can be specific about what I want to read. It’s easy to navigate and there is quite a lot on there.

Wattpad also has fanfiction, however, that has a lot more to do with celebrities rather than books. A couple of moths ago I wrote a post about reading on Wattpad and what it means to me.

Overall fanfiction is not for everyone; some people love it, some hate it and that is alright. It is fun reading material for those who want to read more in the world of the book or series that they love, hear about characters after the books have finished and it’s a fantastic writing tool for bubbling writers.

Do you read fanfiction? If so, what do you read? What are some of your favourite stories? or Have you read in the past? Or maybe not at all. Let’s Chat!

I never got into fanfiction mostly because I never knew of its existence. It’s definitely has it good and its bad. I’m a little iffy about fanfiction getting book deals because they are stealing the original author’s works in a sense. And haha I feel you about some of the odd pairings. I’ve heard about that from other fanfiction readers. What I don’t get is the judginess you get for reading fanfiction. People should mind their own business. -_-
    Thanks for the great post!

I’ve actually never read ANY fanfiction, but it’s not because I hate it or think it’s wrong or anything – I just never tried it. I agree with you that as long as the writers aren’t making any money from their stories, there’s nothing really wrong with it. Maybe I’ll have to go over to fanfiction.net and give it a try!

I’m pretty middle-ground with fanfic myself! Like I have absolutely nothing against it and I think it’s great that people can practise their writing with it. Buuut I wouldn’t write it myself and I really don’t like to read it. Just because I always feel like the author knows what they wanted to say, and if they didn’t say it then…I’m not interested. haha. 😂 Although there are SOME books where my ship has sunk and I’ve been tempted to find fanfic that corrected that. 😂😂

I will always defend fanfiction at every opportunity, because it’s so wonderful and important. Beyond the fun side, it also provides the opportunity for characters to be recreated with diverse identities, which provides more diverse works for readers to see themselves in.

I love that you mentioned how fanfic can help aspiring authors because that is super true! My writing has improved so much since I started writing fanfic, and I know that I wouldn’t be in the same place as I am right now as a writer if it wasn’t for fanfic.

I don’t read as much fanfic as I write, but I have read Merlin, The Raven Cycle, and Captive Prince fanfics 😀

Definitely don’t be discouraged by people who may look down it – they just don’t know how wonderful it can be <3

I like reading fanfiction. It’s saved me from boredom and series-ending/withdrawal more times than I can count. I usually read them at Archive of Our Own as there are just soooo many there in different genres, from funny to smutty to scary to heartbreaking.

Definitely Merlin fanfiction, with Les Miserables’ Les Amis recently, and several others. I agree that it’s a great way to learn how other readers view a character – and to see that they think like you!

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

After a week off we are back at it. We are in Miami this week’s and things are only just heating up. This week I’m reading Falling Off the Cliff Kanitha P.

…

Formula 1 legend in the making and rising star Thiago Valencia is chasing redemption as well as his second World Champion title. With a tarnished reputation and an undetermined future in F1 that hangs by a terribly loose thread, he can’t afford to lose his seat. Thiago is ready to do anything to redeem himself and erase his past mistakes. When a mysterious woman intrudes on his private party in Monte Carlo, he is certain the universe has brought his polar opposite into his life as salvation. He is sunshine, she is moonlight; he is a bright star and she is a moonbeam.

Destiny takes the wheel, steering Kamari into Thiago’s orbit, but her open disdain and closely guarded heart warn her to stay away. Enchanted by her charms, Thiago is intent on melting her freezing barriers and tearing down the walls shielding her heart.

When Kamari agrees to help him save his future by being his fake girlfriend, the unexpected happens, triggered by a game of lies, secrets and desire.

As they plunge towards the finish line, the race veers offtrack and neither of them are ready to fall off the cliff.
…

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
