Ten Books To Read To Get Into YA

Ten Books To Read To Get Into YA

April 12, 2016 Posted by angelreads Features, Top Ten Tuesday 14 Comments

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten list that members at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. All bloggers are then welcomed to join. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is: Top Ten Books For Every X To Read. I picked the X of – people who want to read YA; young adult.

When I first started to read YA, when I was 12/13 it was all to do with Vampires, Werewolves and Angel’s – I was 12 when the first Twilight movie came out so it was when the movement was strong. I have put a list together in different genre for those people who want to read YA and don’t really know where to start.

These are in no order, but to me a good indication on where to start in the big world of YA. Sometimes I have an author instead of a book, because I think any of their books will do.

Books To Read YA1

Contemporary:
John Green: Any books by John Green is a good way to start in contemporary, it’s how I started and I think they are easy to read and understand. I love Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars.

Morgan Matson: She is a newer author to me, even though I have been reading her books for over 2 years. She books with hurt, but they are quite beautiful. Book Review: Since You’ve Been Gone. My review on The Unexpected Everything will be up soon too – hint – I loved it.

Stephanie Perkins: Her books are fluffy, cute and they always out me in the a good mood.

Books To Read YA2

Fantasy
The Winner’s Trilogy by Maire Rutkoski: Okay this is my favourite fantasy trilogy – even though it’s not really fantasy, but it is. It’s all confusing – just read it. The Winner’s Curse | The Winner’s Crime | The Winner’s Kiss

Percy Jackson World: So this again is a little round about on fantasy – however I feel that when trying to get people into fantasy and giving them a big 600 page+ fantasy book with lots of world building would deter them. However, if they start off with the Percy Jackson books, they are on a good start as the books go on the characters get older.

Books To Read YA3

Urban Fantasy
The Mortal Insturments by Cassandra Clare: I know this isn’t the first books in the world, however they are modern-ish, easy to read and both males and females will enjoy it.
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead: This is how I got into reading YA. There is killing, romance and everything in between.

Books To Read YA4

Science Fiction
Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer: A world that isn’t too heavily complicated, with cyborgs and androids, theses books are so fun to read.

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner: This is such a good read for those who like science fiction and space – I cannot wait to read more.

That is this for this week! What would you recommend for people trying to get into YA? Do we share anything the same? Let’s Chat.

Ahhh these are SUCH good picks. I LOVE IT. :’) Although I’m curious to why you say The Winner’s Curse isn’t fantasy? XD I’m reading The Winner’s Kiss right now and asfjdklsafsd ALL THE FEELS. *hyperventilates quietly* Oh oh and John Green and Cassandra Clare are definitely CLASSIC needs for all YA readers to at least try. Also Suzanne Collins. 😀

ITt is but it isn’t – it doesn’t have any ‘magic’ per say. So I feel if I say it’s full fantasy people will expect that, you get me? You are going to die. I tried to keep my review spoiler free, but damn it was hard haha. I could have written so much more.

Yes, they don’t have to like them, but they have to try. I forgot about The Hunger Games..opps hah.
      Thanks for the comment.

Percy Jackson is everything that’s good with the world! And it’s a perfect start of the fantasy genre, I agree.
I was never able to get into John Green books myself but I can appreciate his clever writing 🙂

These are FANTASTIC picks!!!! Definitely 100% stand behind Morgan Matson and Stephanie Perkins for Contemps. I’m a total contemporary reader, so I love those ladies!!! I’d also recommend Kasie West, Rainbow Rowell and Sarah Dessen. I still need to read The Winner’s Trilogy. I KNOW! I really need to get on that. I LOVED the Lunar Chronicles!!! Such an amazing list! ♥

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. But I ended up really enjoying this one. It’s best friends to fake dating to-lovers. It’s always been you, bad-boy/good-girl, and I loved that. While Save Your Breath has quite a few tropes, it really leads itself to it, and it works.

Aleks and Mia have known each other for years now. Since they were teenagers, that angst has been building up this whole time. And you can tell right from the get-go, it’s fantastic. I even wanted more of it, because I love pain. When Aleks went to live with Mia’s family as a teenager, sparks flew, but for many reasons, they both put their feelings aside. And well, now they are not only going to be fake-dating, but they might as well be engaged, too.

I really enjoyed seeing how both Aleks and Mia both tried to hide how they were feeling throughout the whole ‘fake-dating’ situation, but anyone could see it. They know each other as no one else does. Aleks has a lot going on, and while I do think this was brushed over a little too much, Mia is his centre. Mia is a massive music star and is a female in the industry, so yeah, people don’t respect her. Obvsiouly because why couldn’t a female star be badass and write about the things that she has gone through? Aleks and Mia get each other, and that is very clear from the start; they are both just trying to squash everything. We get to see them slowly start to show how they feel, and well, one night it all explodes.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot; it’s not my favourite of the series, but I had a great time reading it. I liked Aleks and Mia a lot as characeters and while I think the mental health aspect could have been explored a whole lot more, I can see why it wasn’t. The romance was slow and spicy, the angst was great, and the payoff for these two was what they needed.
