In Earth’s battle-ridden future, humans have evolved. Those with extraordinary skills rise to power and fame. Those without live in poverty.

Sixteen-year-old Willow Kent believed she was normal. But when a genetically-advanced military officer shows up in her village and questions her identity, long-buried secrets begin to emerge. With remarkable skills and a shocking genetic code the Core and its enemies will do anything to obtain, Willow suddenly finds the freedom she craves slipping through her fingers. Greed, corruption, and genetic tampering threaten every aspect of her existence as she’s thrust, unwilling, into the sophisticated culture of the elite Core city. To ensure peace, she must leave the past behind, marry a man she’s never met, and submit to the authority of a relentless officer with a hidden agenda of his own.

Her life has become a dangerous game. How much will she sacrifice in order to win?

Gambit:

I received a free copy of Gambit by C.L Denault from REUTS Publications via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. This has no way influenced my review.

I didn’t know what to expect when I requested to Gambit, I thought it sounded interesting and something that I was going to like. I wasn’t expecting to love it. However, as soon as I started to read, I was captured by the story and the characters. I was in a whirlwind of imagination and enjoyment.

Gambit follows Willow on her journey of self-discovery, heartache, betrayal and a completely new world. I don’t want to say too much and spoil you, hence it’s hard to tell you what the story was about, without giving too much away.

I loved Willow, she was a badass with a soft side. She knew how to stand her ground and if somebody messed with her, well it didn’t end up well for them. Willow is from a Village and has a way of speaking that I loved. It’s that older English/Irish/Scottish type. I can’t explain it, but you know that accent that you hear when you watch fantasy or big war movies set in the United Kingdom – that’s the accent.

She works in the tavern that her family owns and she knows her stuff. She knows how to deal with the drunks and people around the town love and care for her to bits.

Gambit starts off with her working in the tavern on a night that is quite busy, because they are waiting for a message. A message from The Core. The core is where all the wealthy, knowable, well-respectable people live, including the high families. And if you don’t know already the messages isn’t the best of news.

What I really loved about the village that Willow lived in, was that they seemed like this one big family, especially in the tavern – I actually adored the scenes at the start, where you can see everyone looking after each other.

“To navigate the Core, you’re going to need strategy. You’re dealing with elements you don’t yet understand. this city is a chessboard. Here, you either play- or get played.”

I also adored Willow’s family, like every member. When is it that you love every member of the protagonist’s family in a young adult novel – never? But I just loved them all. Both her parents were caring and I wanted to hug them both. They love Willow so much and they will do anything for her. Her siblings as well, just oh my heart, oh of her twin brothers, he melted me.

I feel that Willow had many father figures throughout the novel that it made it unique, she had her dad obvious, her instructor and Joshua. The reader is able to understand that each one of these men care for Willow as a daughter.

Her best friend, I didn’t like him at all. He wants to marry her, (and this isn’t really a spoiler, because you can see it from the start) but he is also really over protective. But the over protectiveness that crosses the line. Yes, I felt a little bad for him, however it was hard to get over the protectiveness side.

I truly enjoyed the world that C.L Denault created. It was fantastic. I was intrigued with everything. I would say the world is a mix of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, Pawn by Aimee Carter and The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski. And I love all these books, therefore it was really interesting. I wanted to know more and more as the story went on. It’s a mix of fantasy, as people have powers, however science also plays quite a bit role.

The tigers had battled, and mine had gone down in defeat.

The reader is able to see Willow grew throughout Gambit and it was pleasing to see. She still has a great deal to learn, nevertheless for a first book in a series she grew quite well.

Reece, what can I say about him. I don’t know if I love him or I hate him yet. You see this commander side, which I don’t like at all. He is rough, tough and horrible. But then you see this soft side and I am just confused.

Overall, I certainly loved Gambit. It was an entertaining, exciting and thrilling read. It’s a mix of fantasy and dystopian and a world that has so much to build on. C.L Denault writing is intriguing and pulls you in and in.

If you enjoyed fantasy and dystopian with a little bit of science that isn’t too hard to understand, then Gambit is the book for you.

Interesting! I don’t think I noticed this one before when I checked out Netgalley a few days ago. Willow sounds like an amazing character and you have no diea how glad I am to see that there is a strong family support system here! Is there a love triangle, though? You mention that the best friend wants to marry her, but then you felt sorry for him afterwards 😮 I can only conclude that they didn’t end up together after all~ XD

She is, I really loved her. the Family support – I haven’t seen much of that in any YA book that I have read.
hmm okay no there isn’t a love trianlge between the best friend – he has feelings for her, but she doesn’t repay them and he isn’t in the story really anymore after the half way mark – but there is room for one in the second book. I don’t want to spoil anyone so that is the best way I can explain it

Oh wow! This book actually sounds all kinds of awesome, and I am super interested in reading it after having read through your review 😀

I love it when books combine elements of different genres, and when done well, I think it gives a great depth to the story because it isn’t confined by the genre tropes that other books can sometimes fall back on.

I love the sound of the main character! (Her name instantly made me think of Willow from BUFFY, so huge points for that.) It sounds like she’s a character who can handle herself, but is also open to being vulnerable.

This book sounds like something I could really love, and thank you for the great review, dear! 😀 <3

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
