New Feature: Favourite Protagonist Battle - Week 1

A few weeks ago I was thinking about something fun that I can do on my blog, and then something came to mind; A vote off between everyone’s favourite protagonists.

There are going to be 16 protagonists from all across the YA genre’s each week they will face off in a vote. For example the first round of voting will have 8 groups of 2, they will face off and the winning one out of the pairs will move to round 2, and so on. Voting will last from Sunday to Saturday. The winner of the rounds will then be announced and voting will commence the following day.

This week and next week you will get an introduction into all of the contestants. After the first 2 weeks, this is what will follow;

3rd Week – 1st Round – 16 Contestants

4th Week- 2nd round – 8 Contestants

5th week – 3rd round; SEMI-FINAL – 4 Contestants

6th week – 4th round; FINAL – 2 Contestants

I really hope that you enjoy this new feature, I am really excited to be hosting it. There will also be a giveaway, that will last the whole Battle. So get excited.

The Protagonist’s were nominated by you guys. I sent out a tweet and a facebook post about a week ago asking for all your favourite protagonist’s. I will be pulling the names out of a hat to see who will verse who in Round 1 and so on, so on.

Here is the first 8 protagonists and a little bit about then, that will battle if off, for the title of: Angel Reads’ favourite Protagonist Winner 2014.

1. Celaena from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Celaena is an assassin with heart. She’s ruthless when she needs to be but cares deeply for the downtrodden. She takes no shit from anyone and does hold a grudge. Despite being murderous and skilled in the deadly arts – there’s something realistic about her. Celaena is an incredibly strong character; not only is she a kick-ass assassin, but she is smart and sassy, but she will not allow anything to break her spirit. Throughout the book we get glimpses of the tortures of her life, the road that led her to become a notorious assassin, her time in a death camp and how she has nothing left besides her will to survive.

2. Rosie from The Rosie Black Chronicles by Lara Morgan

Rosie lives in ‘Newperth’ (Aus) 500 years in the future and is a ‘Banker’ the middle class between ‘Centrals’ and ‘Ferals’. She’s strong, brave and when she gets caught up with Pip and the issue of Helios introducing the Mal X (mosquito virus) she has to make some tough choices.

3. Lena from the Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver

Lena lives in a dystopian world where love is a disease. At first she may seem like a submissive character conforming to her society but she changes into someone who rebels and shows true inner strength – she really develops throughout the series. She becomes a strong female lead.

4. Miles from Looking for Alaska by John Green

Miles “Pudge” Halter’s is a teenager who chose to go to boarding school to seek his “great perhaps”. Miles is very likeable because he’s relatable. He is book smart but naive in the ways of how life works at times. He has his heart in the right place but he does make mistakes. The flaws make him real and a good protagonist in my eyes.

5. Karou from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series by Laini Taylor

Karou is strong, adaptable, quirky, unique, determined and loyal. She lives two completely separate lives, half living in two different worlds, but feels that she doesn’t really belong in either of them. As her worlds begin to collide, and destruct, Karou struggles with her desire to be a normal teenage girl, her love for her family of monsters and her desire to find out what she is “missing”.

6. Cas from Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Cas is a really interesting character, his personality is really different and quirky. He is also pretty kick-ass. After his father’s murder Cas, feels like it’s his duty to take on his father’s role that he left. The fact that he hunts down ghosts and wipes them out is just so damn cool. Cas is defiantly not your typical 17 year old boy. Cas is the quirky, somewhat geeky guy next door.

7. Quentin ‘Q’ Jacobsen from Paper Towns by John Green:

Quentin takes you along a journey following the mystery that is his childhood crush, Margo Roth Spiegelman. Quentin’s narrative walks you through clues he believes Margo has left for him to help him find her when she disappears suddenly. Quentin is clearly a very loyal friend, though stuck on an event in the past that he experienced with Margo. His need to find her becomes borderline obsessive, but you cannot help but want him to find her just as much as he does. At times both his single-minded focus & the obstacles he encounters becomes frustrating for the reader but Quentin is very likeable.

8. Tris from the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth

Tris was a person who didn’t belong in her original faction of Abnegation. Far from being meek and selfless, conforming to the norm which she has always lived by, she soon discovers that she wants to take a new direction in her life. When she chooses to join Dauntless her whole personality changes and she starts to take more risks and take on the traits of becoming fearless in the face of danger. Among all the action of jumping off trains, and other things she manages to juggle a looming romance while still being true to herself.
