Five of us went out on the water that night.
None of us came back whole, and not all of us came back.Best friends Matt and John are spending the summer working: Matt to save money for college, John to kill time before trade school. On the beach, the beautiful Driana stops Matt in his tracks.
Dri, Stef and JoJo invite the boys to a party at Dri’s Hamptons mansion, and Matt drags John along. When Stef decides it’s a beautiful night to go windsurfing, the others race out on the water to make sure she’s safe. But with no land in sight and a broken boat engine, it’s not just Stef they have to worry about. And as the hours turn into days, the prospect of rescue seems further and further away…

Adrift:

I received a copy of Adrift by Paul Griffin from Text Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced by thoughts about the book.

I liked Adrift by Paul Griffin, but I didn’t love it. I really enjoyed the plot and most of the characters, but I felt that everything went too fast.

Adrift follows Matt and his best friend John on a summer journey that isn’t that they were expecting. I still don’t know if I like Matt, though the book was told from his perspective, I felt that he was really disconnected and at times I couldn’t trust him. He is sort of the omniscient narrator. Matt is the nice guy, but he is also quite boring and I think that is one of the reasons why I didn’t love the book.

John on the other hand as very intriguing and I wanted to know more about him; but he hid himself a great deal and although Matt is his best friend he doesn’t really know him well in a sense and just sees what John puts up. I wanted to hug John, he has been through quite a lot and from the start of the book; I got the idea that he is the suffer in silence kind of guy and Matt just doesn’t see this. As the book goes on Matt starts distancing himself from John and it broke my heart for John because he needs someone.

The other characters are Driana, JoJo and Stef and you know what? I didn’t really care about them. I know that this sounds bad, but I felt that Matt had no emotional connection with them which is ironic for people who have read the book. Their personalities just didn’t shine.

I also felt that they were, dare I say it; stupid. Just why, oh why would you take a boat out without checking how much fuel it has or checking if it works. At this point, no one was in trouble, but four of you go and jump in without thinking about it.

Other than that little stuff that I had everything else was quite realistic and had me turning page after page. Once they were out in the open sea, everything just seemed so much more real. I was intrigued at how the characters interacted with each other, I really thought that this was done really well. I also like how they all felt differently about what was happening and how being stranded out at sea affecting them.

I was left on my seat for most of the book, not knowing what was going to happen, asking all these questions. It was thrilling at times.

The medical and psychological aspects of Adrift was done brilliantly. It was gross, interesting and so intense. The way that the injuries were described were so disgusting, but done in a way that seemed so real. Also that fact that Matt is studying things to do with medical made it interesting; seeing him trying to figure out what to do.

I didn’t really like the writing style of Paul Griffin in Adrift. There are a lot of short sentences that ‘cut in’ of what was being said and I felt that the sentences were uncompleted. It was sentence after sentence, it didn’t flow nicely.

I was also disappointed in the ending. Yes it was realistic, but it was also a letdown. Everything was different from before; obviously, but I thought from those who survived that they would be brought closer together.

Overall, I liked Adrift, it was a fast paced, emotional thrilling read that kept me on edge.

I’ve heard a lot of varied things on this book, Cait at Paper Fury said she didn’t like the characters much, and you with the pacing, I”m just not sure it’s a book I really want to try, you know? I don’t know if you’ve watched it, but Cast Away featuring Tom Hanks is such a good ‘lost at sea/trapped on island film, and you may like it. I definitely did! 🙂

I’ve read a few reviews now that point out the same flaws and same positives so it seems like there is a general consensus about the pacing and realism, but couldn’t connect to the characters too well. Glad you enjoyed most aspects of it though 🙂

I am so torn whether I want to read this one or not. I mean, I LOVE the survival aspect, but if the characters aren’t likeable and the writing is not great AND the ending was annoying… ugh, I think I will hold off on this one honestly. Maybe I will find it somewhere on sale one day and give it a try 😉 Thanks for the great review!

I must admit that the cover is absolutely STUNNING, I love how the water looks, and the blue is so eye-catching.

Sorry to hear that this book just didn’t work out for you Angel – the characters do sound a little dumb. Who doesn’t check the fuel gauge before they go out…INTO THE OCEAN?! Very silly indeed. The characters all sound a little bland as well. Probably not a book for me. Thanks for the honest review lovely xx

AHHH THIS IS EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS. LIKE EXACTLY. I loved John and though Matt was. so. freaking. boring. ERGHHH. And all the secondary characters just blurred for me, and how stupid could they possibly be to go out in a boat without checking it?! Unless they were blind drunk? But I don’t think they were. So. Ergh. Yes. I liked it but I didn’t love it either. REVIEW TWINS THO, SERIOUSLY. *hi fives*

hahah Twins!!! yes John was a very intersting character but I liked that it was kept in Matt’s pov because it meant that John stayed a mystery.
I KNOW. like come on, you are going into the sea in the middle of the night – make bloody sure you have petrol. They weren’t drunk…I don’t think.
yer it was an okay book – didn’t love it but didn’t hate it.

This kind of sounds like my type of read. I like realistic takes on survival and while you did not like the short sentences, I have a feeling that I’d like that style. Thanks for the really great and honest review. I’d keep your thoughts in mind when I get my hands on this 🙂

April was a very good reading month for me, especi April was a very good reading month for me, especially after last month. I had some really fantastic reads in April. I did do a lot of re-reading this month but I had such blast. I re-read Caught Up and Play Along and the first 4 books in the Ironside Academy series. 📚

I read some books that I’ve been waiting for including the new book from Kels and Denise Stone, as well as the new Tessa Hale. ✨

Overall it was such a good month, lots of binge reading series and starting on some new authors. I’m so excited to see what May brings. 🖤

What was your favourite book that you read in April?

A little late but I am finally getting to share Ra A little late but I am finally getting to share Race 5’s Race Week Reads review. This week I read, Downforce (Pit Lane #1) by Hannah Lily.

🏎️ Review 🏎️

I had so much fun reading this book. I knew I was in for a ride as soon as I started Downforce. It was entertaining, fun, and I just had a good time reading it. And while it does explore some heavy topics, I don’t think it took away from the fun nature of the book.

Right from the start, we can see the tension between F1 Presenter, Olivia Fraser and F1 Driver, Jonah Scott. And while silly at times, it was fun seeing them interact together. Both really didn’t like each other. They both had said things about and to one another that sometimes it caused chaos. And I was here for it.

I did find that at times, just silly things happened. I am not a massive rom-com reader, and there was a lot of falling into one another, and arguments stemmed from nothing. This is honestly just because I don’t like these types of scenes, but it didn’t really make me dislike the book at all.

I loved the whole road trip aspect of the book, it’s different from other F1 books I’ve read so far this year and just made for some interesting banter and lust. I do wish that the road trip was a little longer than it was because I did feel like the romance moved pretty quickly here, but again, it didn’t really affect how much I was enjoying the book.

The romance was this combination of being slow burn and full of angst right at the start, to the road trip happening and then bam. But I loved it, though. The banter between Olivia and Jonah was fantastic. I loved seeing them grow not only with one another but with themselves as well.

Overall, I had a great time reading Downforce and will be continuing the series for sure when the other books come out. The romance was angsty and just felt right. The found family aspect really worked well here, and the F1 aspects were pretty okay. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either. If you are looking for a fun read that has a great romance and a little rom-comy, then pick this one up.
I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. I’ve already had a pretty amazing reading year. There have been so many books that I have enjoyed but there are some that I have just loved. 🖤

I didn’t realise before I put this post together that all of these books are from authors I’ve read and loved before. There hasn’t been a Rebecca Yarros book that I haven’t rated under 4 Stars. Elsie Silver is just making me love everything that she writes. Wild and Wrangled may be my favourite in the series. 📖

Three rereads also made it to this list. Binding 13 still makes me gasp and smile all at the same time. And Caught Up and Play Along just hit every time. 📚

I’ve honestly had a great year so far and since making this post a few more books I’ve read I’ve ended up loving. It’s going to be hard to pick my favourites at the end of the year that is for sure. ✨

What books have you loved reading this year? Are any books that made my list on yours? Let me know!
